BACKGROUND: Schimenti Construction builds over 35 T•Mobile stores each year. They have come to depend on our Value Engineering mindset to reduce their costs while maintaining their scheduled rollout.
CHALLENGE: T•Mobile’s building documents for city stores call for a security gate with a card reader to open and close the gate. The card readers were expensive ($4,000 per store) and frequently failed within six months of store opening. Store personnel would often lose their cards requiring costly reprogramming of replacement cards.
SOLUTION: Schimenti’s project manager took the initiative and did some hard-nosed research. He found a very economical and more reliable alternative to the T•Mobile card reader. Then he presented T•Mobile management with a receiver module that plugged right into the security gate. The module and five remote controls could be purchased for only $350.
RESULT: T•Mobile immediately recognized the benefits of this simple solution and incorporated the change into their new stores in New York City. The result was a savings of over $3,500 for each store. The savings over the past two years alone have totaled around $200,000.
